The Drinks Cabinet: Old Fashioned

This Sunday we’ll be celebrating our dear old dads and, here at Dartington Life, we believe that all celebrations require cocktails. What better way to toast your father, than with a round of Old Fashioneds? If history serves us right, the legendary old fashioned was invented in the 19th century, by a bartender at the famous Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Now, we may not have the original recipe, but what we do have is an Old Fashioned fit for a fabulous father….

  • 1 thick slice of orange peel
  • 1 maraschino cherry, with stem
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2-3 drops Angostura bitters
  • ice cubes
  • 50ml bourbon

Squeeze your orange peel and rub it around the inside of a tumbler glass, leaving it in the glass when you’re finished. Throw three ice cubes into the tumbler, along with the cherry, bitters and sugar syrup. Add half the bourbon and stir for ten seconds. Add three more ice cubes and the remaining bourbon and stir for a further 15 seconds. Voilà, your Old Fashioned is complete and ready for consumption!
