What’s New Now – Autumn/Winter Interiors Trends by Alison Davidson, Homes Editor of Woman & home

Twice a year all the major stores and designers reveal their looks for the coming season and this season is no exception. Interiors trends don’t move as fast as fashion, but themes do filter through, navy blue for example was a big hitter on the catwalks and there are lots of moody blues around, especially for walls, but also on furniture and soft furnishings.

Copper is still a huge trend, on wire pendant lights, vases, picture frames, as a trim on lamps, occasional tables, on cushions and curtain fabric. In fact all ‘warm’ metals are popular again including brass and rose gold.

Leather makes a re-appearance after a brief absence, in all colours from tan to chocolate, on sofas, armchairs and footstools some with stud detailing and some with a mixture of wood and leather for a funkier look. In traditional shapes and modern designs too.

Checks and tartans are big news for soft furnishings – curtains, cushions and upholstery. If you don’t want to go the whole hog, add a checked armchair to bring your room up to date and to give you a cosy look for the Autumn.

Marble is another key trend and appears on all sorts of home accessories such as clocks, lamps, even marble-effect plates.

There is also a romantic feel around with cushions inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite movement of artists, teamed with painterly overblown florals and tactile fabrics such as velvet and chenille.

Cut glass is another hero this season, go to any trendy cocktail bar and you will be served your favourite tipple in what was once seen as dated and is now bang on-trend. Dartington has always produced beautiful crystal and their Royal Brierley collection is exactly what I am talking about, the Bruce, Braemar and Biarritz ranges are perfect examples. Stag motifs continue to trend and the Game Red Stag and Roebuck decanter and tumbler designs are so now.

Grey is another key trend, and has replaced cream as the new neutral. Grey walls are very popular and look so stylish. Or choose a grey sofa and add cushions in varying shades of grey or add brights with cushions and throws in teal, citrine or orange for a pop of colour.

Cocktail cabinets were everywhere this season as staying in becomes the new going out, so it seems we will all be making cocktails at home. Of course, Dartington Crystal have everything to make the perfect cocktail, not only martini, highball and champagne glasses, but ice buckets and even their Gintuition Collection which consists of a martini, copa and highball glass designed in partnership with Fever Tree – the ideal tonic for your gin and tonic – enjoy!
