English Wine Week

24th May 2014

On Saturday 24th May many English wineries throw open their doors to welcome visitors, host tutored tastings, vineyard trails and special offers.

There are now 432 commercial vineyards in England and Wales with 124 wineries, producing 2.58 million bottles of wine last year.

In the last 15 years no other country has achieved greater than the English sparkling wines that have won 8 Trophies for Best International Sparkling Wine and 4 Trophies for Best Sparkling Rose in Global Competitions.

Sparkling wines will become the dominant sector, as most of the new plantings are for sparkling wine production (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier account for nearly 50% of total varietal plantings).

The approximate division of UK wines produced being Sparkling: 60%,
Still White: 30%, Red/rosé: 10%.

By 2015 English Sparkling Wine sales will equate to more the 70% of the imports of Australian Sparkling Wine.
