Crystal Craftsmanship Fit for the Queen at Chelsea Flower Show

London, 20 May 2013

The UK’s most prestigious name in crystal bestowed a celebration gift to
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II today as she took her customary private tour
of the Chelsea Flower Show.

The ‘Chelsea Centenary Vase’ was created by Royal Brierley, a Royal Warrant holder since 1919 and part of the Dartington Crystal group of British brands.

The handmade piece was designed to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show which coincides with the Queen’s Coronation 60th Anniversary year. It was presented on behalf of the Company by Dartington Crystal Marketing Director Richard Halliday.

The unique crystal vase took a total of 44 craft hours to complete and involved 18 skilled workers in its production. This included one designer, one, mould maker, a team of eight glass makers, three glass cold workers, one inspector, one glass cutter, two sand blasters and one master engraver.

The vase features a delicately engraved script nestled around a clematis flower design.

Hilary Green, Dartington Crystal’s Head Designer said:

We wanted to create an elegant and memorable piece with classic lines and harmonious decoration that may, one day, earn its place displaying flowers from the Queen’s gardens in one of the Royal households."

Marketing Director Richard Halliday said:

It was a great honour to present this vase to the Queen and we hope it demonstrates that traditional British craft endures”.

Royal Brierley has supplied Royal households for nearly 100 years and holds the insignia of patronage for both HRH Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince of Wales. The Company has been creating handmade crystalware for over 300 years and represents the very finest in British design and craftsmanship.
